You could do a little half lap rabbet but you would see it from the underside and it would require fastening together. WebIf the rafter tails are so rotted that there's no good wood left for the nails to go through into the new wood, then you'll need to remove the siding between the tails so that your sister can go further up into the attic space. There's nothing else you can do with the existing rafter tails, once you get the area water tight the rot will stop.
